Parents As Teachers

Parent educators are employed by Clayton Schools and hold dual certification in early childhood development (birth to three and three to five years). Through personal visits, parent educators get to know you and your child, providing individualized support until your youngest child goes off to kindergarten. We listen to your questions, concerns and observations and offer strategies to encourage and equip you to meet the goals you have for your family and manage the daily routines and challenging stages of early childhood.

Research-based curriculum is provided on each visit covering topics such as healthy sleep and nutrition, safety proofing, supporting language development, dealing with temper tantrums, encouraging pre-reading and math skills and much more!

Visits are an hour and can take place at your home, the Family Center, a local park or other place of interest. We meet with families throughout the year, and determine the frequency together. A mix of in-person, virtual or phone meetings helps accommodate busy schedules.

PAT hosts events each school year to help families with young kids connect to each other and the community and have fun with their kids. Parent presentations provide practical information on topics like nutrition, toilet learning, avoiding power struggles, sleep and much more.

Annual developmental screenings are a great way to observe your child's development. They include a series of fun activities to determine progress in communication, fine and gross motor, problem solving, self-help skills, and social emotional development along with health, hearing and vision. Screenings are a great way to celebrate milestones and be looking for what comes next in development. They can also be an essential first step in identifying and addressing any barriers to development in the critical early years before your child starts kindergarten.
